Get to know Black Brush Algae (BBA)
© http://www.aqcenter.net/topic/276-algae-causes-and-solutions/
Black brush algae (BBA) is one of the toughest algae to get rid of in the aquarium. It’s tenacious and can overtake and suffocate your plants in a matter of a couple of weeks if not controlled.
It belongs to the Phylum Rhodophyta (Greek meaning, red plant) that includes 5,000 to 6,000 species of mostly multicellular, marine algae. There are 164 freshwater species mostly in the genus Lemanea and Audouinella.
Black brush algae (BBA) is stiff bristle-like branched or unbranched similar to a coarse horsehair. You can recognize it in tight tufts on hardscape and will line the edges of your plant leaves. It’s also known ask black beard algae because it resembles coarse beard hair.
It’s blue-green to olive to dark grey in color when young. It’s typically found in fast-moving streams where it’s ability to anchor itself comes in handy. Unfortunately, that same ability makes it extremely difficult to remove.
How does black brush algae (BBA) get into your aquarium
Easy. It hitchhiked in via plants or even in the guts of fish or inverts. Once the spores are in, they can reproduce quickly under the right conditions.
Does CO2 deficiency or inconsistency lead to black brush algae (BBA)?
Yes, but this isn’t specific to BBA. Inconsistent or deficient CO2 will cause an imbalance in the golden equilibrium that will cause any algae to grow, not just BBA. So, although this is widely thought to be a cause of BBA outbreaks, it’s not totally correct.
Does vitamin B12 cause black brush algae (BBA)?
© http://www.myaquariumclub.com/black-beard-algae-272504.html
Well, that’s an interesting question. There’s a great thread on this at the UKAPS, entitled What exactly causes BBA? Part 2 – Bacterial imbalance.
Here’s the summarized version: High organics in the aquarium cause heterotrophic bacteria to grow exponentially and outcompete the common nitrifying bacteria that we’re used to. Heterotrophic bacteria will result in an increase in vitamin B12 as a byproduct and a decrease in O2 further limiting nitrifying bacteria.
Black brush algae (BBA) uses B12 to grow and the decreased nitrification causes an excess of ammonium that algae use to grow.
Problems with this theory:

* You don’t know if the species of black brush algae (BBA) that is in your aquarium, requires vitamin B12 to grow.
* Decreased nitrification/increase of ammonium should be taken up by plants, if you are sticking to the golden equilibrium

Find out when and where. quality plant availability in the USA. I think it is THE limiting factor in expanding the planted aquarium hobby here. This is why I am so excited to report that Aqvainnova plants will FINALLY be available in the USA in November 2015.
Header image: The people shown in the image are Esther Mous of Aqua Flora (left), Maurizio Castaldini of Anubias (center), and our pro aquascaping friend, Oliver Knott (right).
What are Aqvainnova plants?
Glad you asked! ScapeFu Podcast #45 is all about Aqvainnova! One of the partners of Aqvainnova, Esther Mous, tells you all about their plans and the types of plants they are offering. It’s unlike anything we have in the USA today. Go have a listen and get excited!

Background on Aqvainnova
In an effort to maximize the chances of success, two of the most respected, international aquatic plant growers joined forces to create Aqvainnova. Aqua Flora of the Netherlands and Anubias of Italy, competitors and friends for years, decided that this was the best way to enter this very big but untested market. I love the idea.
What’s more, they decided to launch their innovative Linea Zero line of aquarium plants first in the USA. They will be showcasing both their lines, Linea Zero and Linea In Vitro, at this year’s Aquatic Experience in Chicago on November 6-8.
They have decided to work with the US Importer/Distributor, JBJ that is best known for their Artica chillers. JBJ will also be bringing in the famous German manufacturer of planted aquarium equipment, Dennerle. This means that they have the magic 1-2 punch of plants plus equipment that I think is critical to have success in the USA.
Linea Zero

The Linea Zero are plants that have been grown in vitro but have gone through a second stage of growth. This means that they are stronger and easier to adapt to their new environment.
Here is the initial Linea Zero Aquarium Plants list. It contains information on how the plants and the parameters it likes!
Linea In Vitro

The Linea In Vitro are plants that have been grown disease and algae free.
Here is the initial Linea in Vitro Aquarium Plants list. It too shows the important parameters for the plants.
USA Stores Carrying Aqvainnova
We will be maintaining a list of stores that carry Aqvainnova plants here. If you know of a store that carries them, please let us know.
Aqvainnova made their best guess with their initial plant list that will be available in the USA at the start. If you want something and you don’t see it, please let them know. With sufficient demand, they will make changes.

Learn the basics of light in this aquarium plants tutorial. It does to me! I’ve been there and so has almost every single person who has ever decided to put live plants into a box filled with water a/k/a an aquarium. And if Google doesn’t lie, these are some of the most asked questions related to planted aquariums.
Fear not! I’ve got the solution for you right here! It’s as easy as:

* Lighting – covered in this post
* Carbon dioxide (CO2) – the next post in the tutorial
* Fertilizer – the final post in the tutorial

Sounds complicated but it’s not. YOU’VE got this! I believe in you! Read on to save your plants and your sanity!
Supplemental Podcast:

Also refer to ScapeFu Podcast episode 17 for more on lighting basics.
Aquarium plants need the right amount of light to grow
As some of you may know from dieting, you need the right amount of calories to grow healthy. Too few or too many and you grow poorly and get sick. The amount of light that aquarium plants need is similar to the calories we need to live. We want to give them enough light so that they can grow in a healthy way.
What does light have to do with aquarium plants growing?
Great questions!
Light is energy. This energy powers up a chemical that aquarium plants have in them called chlorophyll. I think of it like rechargeable batteries. Light powers up the plant’s battery a/k/a chlorophyll.

Once light starts to charge chlorophyll, the plant uses it to produce sugar inside of itself. Yes, it’s true! How would you like to produce sugar just by standing in the sun?? Me too!
Once sugar is produced, a complicated process that you don’t really need to know converts it into a chemical called ATP. Yeah, you don’t need to know what that means either. Honestly, all you need to know is that ATP is the fuel used by all living things to grow. So, essentially, the plant converts light energy into chemical energy that it then uses to grow and stay healthy. Get it? Simple, right?
But remember, this process we just talked about (by the way, it’s called photosynthesis) is just like that rechargeable battery. Not enough charge and the battery is very weak and ineffective. Not enough light and the plant can’t make enough ATP and begins to die for lack of food!
If you’re looking for more of a mental challange, the chemical formula for photosynthesis is:
6H2O + 6CO2 ————> C6H12O6 + 6O2
If you don’t speak chemicalese, this translates to: six molecules of water plus six molecules of carbon dioxide produce one molecule of sugar plus six molecules of oxygen. Note the carbon dioxide (CO2) and the oxygen (O2). We will talk more about them later in this tutorial.
OK, OK, so how do we know how much light an aquarium plant needs?
Another great questions! You’re on a roll!
Let’s use that rechargeable battery example again. How do you know when the battery has a full charge?

Well, typically, a light comes on and tells you it’s fully charged, right? The instruction manual will usually also tell you that it will take from X to Y hours for full charge.
I’m your instruction manual for aquarium plants. I can tell you that based on research by very smart, and rather handsome, scientists, most aquarium plants will require from 8–10 hours of light to reach full charge.
How about the equivalent of that little light that comes on when full? Well, we have that too, kinda. When plants reach their full point, you may start to see gas bubbles coming out from the plants. We call this pearling. This is your sign that the plants have reached full capacity.

Does Takashi Amano‘s work inspire you? Do you wonder how someone can be so good at aquascaping? Is it as simple as being a “natural” at it?
The truth is you don’t need to have natural talent to be as good as Takashi Amano. You simply need to do the one thing Amano’s has been doing for over 30 years. It’s called “practice.”
How to practice aquascaping and become the next Takashi Amano
Malcolm Gladwell, in his book Outliers, says that you need roughly 10,000 hours of practice to gain mastery in a field. That’s about 40 hours per week for five years. Mr. Amano has logged more than that in his 30+ year career in aquascaping.
Takashi Amano started his career as a nature photographer traveling to the world’s jungles in 1975. He’s been studying nature since then.
He started Aqua Design Amano in 1982 and has been aquascaping since then. Poorly at first. Gradually improving through practice.
So how do you practice like Amano if you don’t have the time to travel to the Amazon on a photoshoot?
Well, you tell your spouse you are giving up your paying profession to risk it all starting a planted aquarium business. Or, like me after my wife helped me see that I would not make a good business owner (thank you, honey!), you can figure out how to consistently work on hardscape and planting.
I came up with the ScapeFu Dojo. You can find it at some good local fish stores but this is your do-it-yourself version and it’s “spouse-approved.”
Here’s the accompanying, ROUGH, video I made to show you how to make it:

It’s my first video so be kind. I know it can be better. LOL. But that’s the point, right? Practice! I need more practice!
Practice Homework for YOU!

In episode 34, we explain them in detail and arm YOU with the information you need to make an informed purchasing decision. Episode 34 of the ScapeFu Podcast is about CO2 regulators, one of the most important pieces of equipment and one you don’t want to skimp on. We breakdown what you need to know to make sure you make an informed purchase and stay safe.

Some of what JJ and I discussed

* difference between single and dual stage regulators
* the dreaded CO2 dump
* whether materials matter
* importance of a good needle valve
* bubble counter or no bubble counter
* what a solenoid is
* should you use a pH controller
* and much more!

Other topics we covered
We asked our Facebook fans to give us questions they wanted us to cover. These are the questions they asked:

* Should I not run co2 at night?
* What is a cerges reactor and should I use one? – although I’m not sure we wrapped this one up. You can use one if you want, Matt! 😉
* pH meter or timer? – Also, check out ScapeFu episode 15 Measuring CO2 in Your Aquarium
* Citric acid? – you do know about the volcano-style CO2 generator, right??
* tips to keep the diffuser white and algae free…

Today, it’s about ways to knock out the smelliest of all algaes – it’s blue green algae a/k/a cyanobacteria!
Yes my friends, those of you that have been visited by this nasty, slimy type of algae know what I’m talking about. It’s an ugly bugger. Here’s how to get rid of it.
First, as always, you need to make sure you have all of the positive variables correct. Pay particular attention to organics and the resulting low oxygen levels in the aquarium. To wrap up, I’m starting a new trend today and closing with a thought on aquascaping for you to reflect on until the next time. And, here it is:

Using Excel to Kill Algae | SFPT008 http://scapefu.com/excel-to-kill-algae/ Wed, 01 Apr 2015 06:00:00 +0000 http://scapefu.com?p=1133&preview_id=1133 http://scapefu.com/excel-to-kill-algae/#respond Art Pennom <p>Using Seachem's Excel to kill algae is effective</p> <p>Excel contains glutaraldehyde. According to our friend Wiki:<br /> Glutaraldehyde is an organic compound with the formula CH2(CH2CHO)2. A pungent colorless oily liquid, glutaraldehyde is used to sterilise medical and dental equipment. It is also used for industrial water treatment and as a preservative.<br /> It is what causes Excel to kill algae as both a spot treatment or tank wide treatment. However, use with care as shrimp and sensitive fauna/flora may have an adverse reaction.<br /> How to use Excel to kill algae<br /> First and foremost, please make sure everything else is in order. Things such as water change, proper fertilizer, CO2, lighting, temperature and clean filter. Without curing the cause of the algae in the first place, killing it will only be a temporary thing. No one wants that.</p> <p>My preferred method of using Excel to kill algae is to spot treat. Take a plastic syringe or pipette and put it right up to the algae. Hit it and wait for two days.</p> <p>The algae should turn white and die. If it doesn't, hit it again with, perhaps, a little bit more. Keep doing this for a couple of more times. If it doesn't die, then it's resistant and this technique won't work.</p> <p>You can also try a full tank dosage if you have a lot of algae. I would make sure that the tank inhabitants are not sensitive and definitely don't try this if you have shrimp. Start with a regular dose, then the next day go up to 2 times then wait two days. If the algae has not turned white and begun to die, hit it again with 3 times the dose.</p> <p>I've used the above method successfully many times over the years. I wish you good luck and please let me know what your experience is in the comments.</p> <p>Here is a link that you may find useful:</p> <p> Someone who tested Excel and found it working to kill algae</p> <p>Do you have a tip that is making your aquascape or life better?<br /> Please pay it forward and share it with your fellow hobbyists! It's at the Lisbon Oceanario. Jurijs was there and tells us all about it and what it was like to work with Takashi Amano and the ADA team.

The Lisbon Oceanário aquarium will open, on 22nd April of this year, a new temporary exhibition entitled, “Underwater Forests” by Takashi Amano. It is the largest nature aquarium in the world and it was done with the assistance of over 40 volunteers, aquascapers from around the world. Our very own Jurijs was one of them and in this episode he takes us behind the scenes and tells us what it was really like to work with Takashi Amano and his Aqua Design Amano team for a week.
The Oceanario’s temporary exhibition will run for 30 months and will make visitors feel like they are in a forest with sights and smells.
The exhibition showcases the amazing world of tropical forests and their aquatic systems through an outstanding nature aquarium that will immerse visitors in the magnificience of these ecosystems … [sic] Accompanied by an original music of Rodrigo Leão, a Portuguese famous musician and composer.
The centerpiece of this exhibition is the world’s largest nature aquarium created by Takashi Amano. It measures about 132 feet (40 meters) long and has about 42,000 gallons (160,000 liters) of fresh water. “The artistic and conceptual vision of this Japanese master aquascaper is an interpretation of the tropical forests that reveals the great power of their balance,” says the Oceanario’s marketing piece.
Behind the Scenes with Jurijs on working with Amano and the world’s largest Nature Aquarium
Jurijs answers all our questions and gives us his first-hand experiences that included hours of spraying plants and wrapping moss onto branches!
The aquarium’s layout includes:

* 4 tons of sand,

I show you how to do it right.

Automatic fertilization is today’s pro tip. It’s definitely not needed by everyone and it can be expensive. However, if you travel for business (like me) or just want to simplify your life, then an automatic fertilization system is just what you need.
Why is automatic fertilization important?
Maintaining a constant nutrient level in the aquarium is vitally important to keeping algae at bay and your plants growing healthy. As a result of this, most fertilization regimens, like the estimative index, require you to dose nutrients on a frequent basis.
Most aquarists accomplish this by simply dosing when they visit with their tank daily. It is great practice to check on your aquarium for a few minutes a day to make sure everything is fine and working as it should. This is all the time you need to throw some fertilizer into the aquarium and you’re done.
However, when you’re away from home or, let’s admit it, a bit lazy, you may find that you end up skipping days or even weeks without properly fertilizing your aquarium. This, obviously, will result in problems like algae and poor plant growth. An automatic fertilization system, in this case, would take your place and ensure that the aquarium is fertilized on a consistent basis.
What is an automatic fertilization system?
The system should be reliable and as simple as possible in order to prevent problems. All you need is a specialized dosing pump, tubing, containers to hold the fertilizer solution and a tube holder.
The dosing pump is set to drip your fertilizer solution into the aquarium at specified times and in specific amounts. It’s truly set and forget it until the fertilizer solution runs out. For me, I use a 1.5 liter container that lasts me about two weeks.
Yes, that’s two weeks of not thinking about fertilizing my aquarium. To me, that’s awesome!
What do I need to put an automatic fertilization system together?
There are many ways to do this, but the one I use is a commercial system.

* Bubble Magus Dosing Pump
* Deepwater Aquatics Dosing Container 1.5 liter
* Kamoer Tube Holder

You will need to determine how much of each container you want to add and on what days/times. You should have at least two containers (macro solution and micro solution). You can figure out how much fertilizer to add to the solution using this calculator.
In order to keep fungus from your automatic fertilization solutions, I would add some Seachem Flourish Excel to each (especially the micro solution).
Really, that’s all there is to it.
Do you have an automatic fertilization system? How did you do it?
Do you have a tip that is making your aquascape or life better?

5 Characteristics of the Perfect Substrate | ScapeFu028

What type of substrate should I use in my aquarium?
This is a question we hear all the time. Perhaps you’ve asked it? It’s a good one because the substrate you use in your aquarium has a lot to do with whether you succeed or fail. Depending on the size of your aquarium and your aquascape, it may be one of the more expensive things to buy as well.
News

* Aquatic Gardeners Association 2015 Convention in Reston, VA April 10–12
* Aqua Design Amano’s “Largest Nature Aquarium in the World” in Lisbon. The gag order on Jurijs is now lifted! Come back for the next episode of the ScapeFu Podcast where Jurijs will give us all the “behind the scene” details!

5 Characteristics of the PERFECT substrate

* Appearance suitable for the aquascape. Does it meet your vision for the aquascape? It’s got to look good to you or everything else doesn’t matter. Remember that you’re trying to tell a story with your aquascape and the substrate must help you do that. Consider the color, size and texture of the granules and what sense of scale it will give the viewer.
* Any good substrate must properly anchor your roots. It’s got to hold them down well. Use too large of a granual size and your tiny rooted plants will have a tough time staying down. Also, it should won’t turn to mush over time. If you use soil, for example, you’ll end up with a mess. Soil + water = mud…
* The substrate must be capable of functioning as a nutrient storehouse. What I mean by this is that a good substrate will have/absorb essential nutrients and hold them (out of solution or in solution but only in the substrate) so that plants can take them up. A substrate’s Cataion Exchange Capacity (CEC) is one way to measure how good a substrate is at doing this.

The all-knowning Wiki tells us that CEC is the total capacity of a soil to hold exchangeable cations. CEC is an inherent soil characteristic and is difficult to alter significantly. It influences the soil’s ability to hold onto essential nutrients and provides a buffer against soil acidification.
Another way substrates create a nutrient storehouse is by providing the proper home to bacteria and microorganism that convert nutrients to forms available to plants. They also finish certain cycles such as the nitrogen cycle. They are critical for the long-term success of your aquarium.

* The perfect substrate won’t negatively affect water chemistry. Substrates with limestone/calcium will change the hardness of your water. Pour some muriatic acid (CAREFUL!) on a substrate that you’re unsure of and see if it bubbles, fizzles or melts. Don’t use it if it does.
* The perfect substrate won’t cloud the water by constantly releasing substances such as tannins.
* Bonus! The perfect substrate is cheap and easy to obtain. But, should it be cheap?

Question: is a combination of substrates (for example, Power Sand + Aquasoil) better than only one substrate (Aquasoil)?
We’ve done it both ways and either works.
What are some of the commercial substrates we’ve used?

If your aquascape calls for a thick substrate and you’re wallet is starting to hurt because it’s going to cost a lot to use 100% expensive substrate, think about using a pumice substrate base layer to build it up. Then cover this layer with the substrate of choice.
Pumice is a type of extrusive volcanic rock, produced when lava with a very high content of water and gases (together these are called volatiles) is extruded (or thrown out of) a volcano. As the gas bubbles escape from the lava, it becomes frothy.
Using a pumice substrate base layer is a great idea because:

* Saving money because it’s
cheap and easy to get.
* It creates a great environment for the microbes that are necessary in the substrate.

It doesn’t have to be pumice. You can also use ceramic rings like the ones you put in filters. Really almost anything that’s inert will work.
If you’re going to use a pumice substrate base layer, please remember to wash it thoroughly before adding it to the aquarium. It typically contains dust that you want to remove. Also, don’t make it too thick because it will cause the top substrate layer to deform over time. Either use less or mix with the substrate to get a thick, strong layer.
Thanks, Guiseppe!
Have you used this technique of a pumice substrate base layer before? Let us know in the comments. How’d it work out for you? What else have you used that worked?

What is the Dry Start Method?
Popularized by Tom Barr back in 2007, the Dry Start Method is intended to solve a problem people have with setting up an aquarium with tiny carpet plants. The problems are:

* These plants, like Hemianthus callitrichoides or HC, have tiny roots that are extremely difficult to plant.
* There’s a tendency to float when you flood the aquarium with water.
* HC also needs a lot of light and CO2 to grow well and carpet the aquarium bottom. Pressurized CO2, strong light and clear water are needed to get it established well in the aquarium. Not everyone can start with the right equipment and frequent water changes needed for clear water.
* Algae is a risk until HC really takes root.

From Tom’s article, the benefits of the dry start method are:

* No algae
* No water changes/loose pieces floating around/being pulled up
* No replanting
* No cycling the aquarium
* No dosing
* No fiddling with CO2
* No having to buy a lot of plant material initially
* No transition from emergent to submersed states(some plants will, but with good CO2, this is greatly minimized)
* No extra electrical cost running other equipment during the dry phase.
* No labor
* Can do it outside in a tray even………

Dry Start Method: 7 Tips for Success
Tips:

* Light for full 10–12 hours to power photosynthesis and growth.
* Cover with cling wrap or glass or plastic. 100% for a few days then slowly peel corner.
* Hills are OK but you may want to pre-saturate. In fact, always pre-saturate. No puddles!
* Inert substrates will require liquid fertilizer. Dilute foliar fertilizer
* Patience! Resist the urge to flood! Wait 3–6 weeks at least
* When flooding, do 3–4 large 80%+ water changes to flush out substrate.
* Mould or fungus – H2O2 1:4 with water or Excel straight up

Not everyone thinks the dry start method is the bomb. Niko’s post on APC for example. He suggests an ebb and flow system.

This week we go outside the aquarium to teach you the naturally beautiful art of Wabikusa.
Wabikusa is derived from the Japanese concept of wabisabi. Wabi connotes rustic simplicity, freshness or quietness. Sabi is beauty or serenity that comes with age, when the life of the object and its impermanence are evidenced in its patina and wear.

In today’s Japan, the meaning of wabi-sabi is often condensed to “wisdom in natural simplicity.” In art books, it is typically defined as “flawed beauty. Combine it with the word Kusa that means “grass” in Japanese, and you begin to understand what is meant by wabikusa.

IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN:

* What is wabikusa and how is it different than immersed culture?
* How to create the perfect wabikusa:

* What ingredients go into the wabikusa ball and how to do it yourself?
* What plants can be used in a wabikusa?
* How do you attach the plants to the substrate ball?

* What are the keys to maintaining a beautiful and growing wabikusa?

* How to avoid fungus and algae?
* How much light should you use?

In this week’s episode of the ScapeFu Podcast, we have an interview with Oliver Knott recorded at the 2014 Chicago Aquatic Experience and we talk about the new aquarium plants line from Europe, Aqvainnova. Availability of quality and easy-to-get aquarium plants is crucial for the hobby to grow.
News
Aquatic Gardeners Association 2015 Convention in Washington, D.C. April 10-12, 2015. This time the Greater Washing Aquatic Plant Association is hosting. The Keynote Speaker is George Farmer, famed UK aquascaper. There’s a Jeff Senske versus George Farmer aquascaping challenge, Tom Barr, Nano competition and more. We hope to see you there!
Oliver Knott and Aqvainnova
We’ve discussed Aqvainnova before on the ScapeFu Podcast. However, this time we discuss their introduction to the US and how much they are needed!
They come in what look like salad or sandwich clear plastic boxes. And, they even come in combo packs that have what you need to create certain styles like Iwagumi!
Oliver needs no introduction. He’s been a professional aquascaper in Europe for years and is one of the most well-known aquascapers around the world.
He’s got his own line of products and is very active in the hobby. Check him out at his personal site Oliver-Knott.com.

ScapeFu Wednesday Pro Tip: Creating Sections in Your Aquascape with Plexiglass
In this week’s episode of the ScapeFu Wednesday Pro Tip, we share a tip to help create those beautiful multi-substrate aquascapes that the pros make look so easy.
[app_audio src=”http://traffic.libsyn.com/scapefu/ScapeFuProTip002.mp3″]
In this pro tip, we discuss how using simple, clear Plexiglass can be the best way to create sections in your aquascape that hold two different types of substrates. Like in Felipe Oliveira’s wonderful Syrah pictured above, you too can create the white sand section that will look that way months into the future.
Go have a listen to find out how.
The tools mentioned in the episode are:

* Plexiglass
* Plexiglass cutter
* Heat gun
* Coffee cans

Do you have a tip that is making your aquascape or life better?
